Trading Strategies Installation Instructions

Several times I was made a remark that I should not explain each time the process of installing the trading system in the articles on forex trading strategies. Saying that everybody knows it anyway.

But, believe me, this website is visited by a lot of beginners who can have problems even with a banal process of installing the trading system in the terminal. So, in order not to cover this topic in each article, I decided to make a small manual on trading strategies (systems) installation in the Metatrader 4 terminal. In the event of problems at the beginners, I will just give a link to this article.

It should be noted that this guide is intended for those strategies, which are bundled with any of the files to be installed in the terminal if the strategy has not indicators, for example, is completely based on the combination of candlesticks, you do not need to install anything 🙂

But if the strategy has some files, then we act according to the following instructions.

1. You must have downloaded and installed Metatrader 4 trading platform.

2. Look what files we have in the archive with the trading system. Usually, it is an indicator(s), template, sometimes strategy supporting advisors (to work with expert advisors read the FAQ on installation and trading with EA).

Indicator files (.ex4 or .mq4) need to be copied into MQL4/indicators folder to the Data Folder.

To get into this directory, run the terminal and click File -> Open Data Folder

Also often there is a strategy template file for quick installation on a chart. This file has .tpl extension, it must be copied to Templates folder.

3. Next, restart our Metatrader 4 terminal, click on the top bar of the program Tools-> Options and on Expert Advisors tab, tick the box as on the screenshot below. Then click OK.

4. In the “Market Watch” window, right click on the name of the currency pair for which the system is designed, and select the “Chart Window“.

Note: If there is no necessary instrument in the “Market Watch”, click on any pair, right-click and select “Show all“.

5. Now we need to change the timeframe (time interval) of the chart on the one that is needed to trade according to the system. Click anywhere on the opened chart, right-click, select Timeframes-> desired timeframe from the list.

6. If your system was supplied with a template, then make a right-click on the chart, choose Template-> Strategy template name.

After that, the system is ready for operation. If there was no template, then you need to install the indicators on the chart manually. Installing and configuring the indicators is discussed in detail here.

Note: After installing the indicator chart, you can save your own template. RMB on the chart -> Template-> Save Template

7. Repeat steps 4-6 to set the system to other currency pairs.
